Did Oil Ruin Your Curls? What to Do If Your Hair Feels Less Curly After Trying DIY Treatments

One of my clients, Carolina, came in thinking she had ruined her curls.

She had been following advice she saw online and tried an oil treatment, leaving it on her hair for a few days. After that, she clarified her hair multiple times trying to fix it—but instead of bouncing back, her curls looked looser, less defined, and she was convinced they were gone.

This is something I’m starting to see more often.

A lot of people are trying DIY treatments without fully understanding how they affect the hair over time. Oils, especially when left on too long, can coat the hair and make it harder for moisture to get in. Then when the hair is over-cleansed trying to remove that buildup, it can leave the curls feeling dry, stretched, and inconsistent.

When Carolina came in, her curls weren’t gone—they just needed the right approach.

Instead of doing anything drastic, we focused on:
• keeping her existing layers (just refining them slightly)
• removing only what needed to be trimmed
• simplifying her routine
• using products that actually support hold and definition

After her appointment, her curls were still there. With the right styling and a better routine, her hair started responding again.

The biggest shift wasn’t just what I did in the salon—it was helping her understand what her hair actually needed.

If your curls feel different after trying something new, it doesn’t always mean they’re damaged beyond repair. Sometimes it just means your hair needs to be reset and supported in a different way.

This is why I focus so much on keeping routines simple.

Most of the time, healthy curls come down to:
• consistent cleansing
• proper conditioning
• using the right styling products for hold

Not layering on more and more treatments.

If you feel like your curls have changed, there’s usually a reason—and it’s something we can work through together.
